A Gift From the Farming Gods

I found out last week that I will be traveling to Costa Rica on March 3 to hang out with farmers and discuss sustainable farming practices.

As a guest of the Rainforest Alliance, I will be spending my days in that lush, tropical land - which I have somehow, never seen - that produces exotic fruits and flowers while investigating their healthy growing philosophies.

It has to do with my job at BlogHer but honestly, I think it's more than that. I think the Universe knows that it's high time I was gobsmacked with an unforseen adventure, one that might cause me to blow the dust off my neglected passport and feel a different air.

I cannot believe my immense luck but I am so grateful. If money were no object, I would travel to each and every country to hang out with local farmers to observe how they work, listen to how they think, ponder their unique challenges and come home reeking of newfound knowledge. Though we all farm in different zones and topographies, we all share that same insane urge to cultivate. Why? Very simple, the world needs this urge of ours to survive. To quote a recent (Paul Harvey/Dodge) Superbowl ad, "And God made a farmer."

But for now, I will take this incredible Costa Rican gift with gratitude and awe. And, oh my goodness, I cannot wait to get dirty once again.

Pura Vida!!! Costa Rica felt like home to me and I know if I seriously asked my husband to mover there, he would. On our last visit, we received a personal tour through a sustainable coffee plantation. It was eye opening to see what a difference that label on the bag of coffee means at the ground level. Enjoy and I can't wait to read about your experience there.

This is great to hear, Val. I've never been much of a coffee drinker but that could all change once I see how it is grown.

Looking forward to plenty of eye-openers!
